Guangzhou (JLC), May 11, 2024 – China's consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, climbed 0.3% year on year in April, posting a year-on-year growth for a third straight month, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed.

On a month-on-month comparison, the CPI rose 0.1% in April, back in the inflation zone.

Dong Lijuan, an NBS statistician, attributed the faster CPI growth to rises in non-food prices, which rose 0.9% year on year in April. Energy prices rose 3.6% year on year in the month, she said.

The core CPI, which excludes food and energy prices, went up 0.7% year on year in April, Dong said.

In January-April, the CPI rose 0.1% from the same period of last year, the NBS data showed.

PPI growth still negative

Meanwhile, China's producer price index (PPI), which measures factory-gate goods prices, fell 2.5% year on year in April, the NBS data showed.

On a month-on-month comparison, the PPI dropped 0.2% in April, the NBS data indicated.
