Guangzhou (JLC), June 13, 2024 – China's consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, climbed 0.3% year on year in May, posting a year-on-year growth for a fourth straight month, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed.
On a month-on-month comparison, however, the CPI dropped 0.1% in May, the NBS data showed.
The core CPI, which excludes food and energy prices, went up 0.6% year on year in May, according to Dong Lijuan, an NBS statistician.
In January-May, the CPI rose 0.1% from the same period of last year, the NBS data showed.
PPI growth still negative
China's producer price index (PPI), which measures factory-gate goods prices, fell 1.4% year on year in May, narrowing from a 2.5% decline in April, the NBS data showed.
On a month-on-month comparison, however, the PPI rose 0.2% in May, the NBS data indicated.
In January-May, the PPI dropped 2.4% from the same period of last year, the NBS data showed.
