Guangzhou (JLC), May 9, 2025--China recorded a year-on-year plunge in its trade with the United States (U.S.) in April 2025, after both countries imposed additional tariffs against each other in the month.

The country's trade with the U.S. valued 45.59 billion U.S. dollars in April, a decline of 19.17% from the same month in 2024, according to the preliminary data from the General Administration of Customs of the PRC (GACC).

China's exports to the U.S. settled at 33.02 billion U.S. dollars last month, a plunge of 21.03% from the same month in 2024, the GACC data shows. Meanwhile, its imports from the U.S. slumped by 13.83% to about 12.57 billion U.S. dollars.

Despite the slump in the trade with the U.S., China's total exports grew 8.1% in April, the GACC data says. In contrast, its imports slipped by 0.2%.

In the first four months of 2025, China's trade with the U.S. went down by 3.1%, versus an increase of 2.9% in the first quarter. Its exports to the U.S. fell by 1.00% year on year to 151.93 billion U.S. dollars, and its imports from the latter dropped by 5.70% to 54.49 billion U.S. dollars, the GACC data also indicates.

China's total imports and exports valued about 1.969 trillion U.S. dollars in January-April, up 1.3% year on year, according to the GACC data. Its exports gained 6.4% to roughly 1.169 trillion U.S. dollars, while its imports fell by 5.2% to 800.3 billion U.S. dollars.
